Constructed in August 1959, the Beijing Workers' Stadium was built to help mark the People's Republic of China's ten-year anniversary.
One of the nation's truly legendary sporting venues, it has played host to both domestic football league action and international competitions. The stadium was the major stage for the 1990 Asian Games before going on to host a series of important matches, including the tournament curtain-raiser and final of the 2004 AFC Asian Cup. For a decade from 1996 to 2006, the stadium was home to Beijing Guoan, one of the C-leagues' undisputed giants.
Having undergone massive renovation in 2006 and 2007 to fulfill the criteria for staging the Olympic Football Tournament, the stadium now boasts a capacity of 57,000-60,000. Situated in the eastern downtown area of Beijing, it is 15 km from the Olympic Village and 20 km from the city's Capital Airport.
