The fate of the OFC Champions League title remains in the balance after Vanuatu’s Amicale and New Zealand’s Auckland City played out a 1-1 opening leg draw on Saturday.
Holders Auckland, who are hunting their fourth successive title, have a slim advantage after collecting a valuable away goal to take home for Sunday’s return leg.
Despite the stalemate it was a day of celebration for football in the Vanuatu capital with over 10,000 spectators cramming into the PVL Stadium.
Amicale were subdued in a cautious first half as Auckland City dictated the pace of the game and they took the lead approaching the half-hour mark as Emiliano Tade slipped a finish past Chikau Mansale.
Amicale threw players forward in an explosive second half in search of a much needed goal which eventually came courtesy of a superb Dominique Fred strike with 11 minutes left on the clock.
The winner will represent Oceania at the 2014 FIFA Club World Cup in Morocco this December.
