With Lionel Messi, Thierry Henry and Samuel Eto'o at Pep Guardiola's disposal, Barcelona are a popular choice to repeat their 2006 conquest. A Franck Ribery-inspired Bayern Munich will, nevertheless, enter their opening 90 minutes at Camp Nou awash with confidence, having overwhelmed Sporting 12-1 in the last 16 to set the competition's record victory for a post-group stage knockout tie.
Another two 21st-century champions will meet when Porto, spearheaded by Lisandro Lopez and Hulk, take on a team they eliminated en route to glory in 2004; holders Manchester United, who will charge Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney with earning them a lead to take to Portugal.
Villarreal and Arsenal, who met in the 2005/06 semi-finals, with the Gunners emerging narrow victors, will resume their rivalry, initially in Spain. Will Marcos Senna, Santi Carzola, Giuseppe Rossi and Co celebrate progression at the Emirates Stadium, or will Andrei Arshavin, Robin van Persie, Emmanuel Adebayor and team-mates seal the Londoners' place in the semis?
Curiously, Liverpool and Chelsea will encounter for the fifth successive Champions League campaign. Three of these previous duels were semi-finals, of which the Reds won two, and they will hope Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres can rise to the occasion when their first leg unfolds at Anfield. The Blues, meanwhile, will entrust Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba, the heroes of their extra-time victory over Rafa Benitez's side in last season's semi-finals, with guiding them through.
