The 2009/10 OFC O-League has commenced with a flood of goals and New Zealand's Auckland City and Fiji's Lautoka stating their intentions with impressive opening wins.

In the other Matchday 1, fixture Tafea of Vanuatu shared the points and six goals with Papua New Guinea's Hekari United. The Papuans came within a whisker of a historic berth in last year's final but had to come from behind to earn a hard-won point after trailing 3-2 at the conclusion of a frenetic first half.

Defending champions Auckland City claimed an early lead in Group A with a comfortable 5-0 win over Tahiti's AS Manu Ura on Saturday, with the other group match to be played next weekend between New Caledonia's AS Magenta and New Zealand's Waitakere United. Auckland's All Whites defender Ivan Vicelich had the honour of scoring the season's first goal in a match the New Zealanders controlled.

O-League debutants Lautoka lead Group B after a convincing 3-1 win over Solomon Islanders Marist FC in front of over 16,000 at Honiara's Lawson Tama Stadium. Kamal Hassan and Samuela Kautoga put Lautoka two goals to the good inside the opening 20 minutes. Abraham Iniga gave Marist hope of earning something from the match until Australian midfielder Nahuel Arrarte scored the clincher during injury time.

The OFC O-League has been expanded this season by two teams to a total of eight in two groups. Last season's winners Auckland City will compete in the FIFA Club World Cup UAE 2009.
