The world’s best FIFA players battled for the FIFA Interactive World Cup (FIWC) Champions Trophy on Wednesday 21 August with Alfonso Ramos of Spain winning the first official tournament using FIFA 14.

It was the second edition of the FIWC Champions Trophy after the current champion, Bruce Grannec, won the inaugural competition last year. This year’s tournament, played at Gamescom 2013 in Cologne, included past FIWC champions Grannec (2009 and 2013), Portugal’s Francisco Cruz (2011) and Spain’s Alfonso Ramos (2008 and 2012) as well as reigning German champion Kai Wollin representing the host nation. Ramos beat Grannec 3-1 in a comprehensive manner to take the trophy.

The FIWC is the world’s largest online gaming tournament, organised by FIFA in association with Presenting Partners EA SPORTS™ and PlayStation®. The tournament began in 2004 and more than 2.5m players around the world competed in last year’s FIWC which was won by Grannec. This year’s competition begins on October 1st and is expected to have more participants than ever. The Grand Final will take place in June 2014 with a big announcement on the location expected next month. The winner will take home a cool 20,000 USD in prize money and enjoy a trip for two to the FIFA Ballon d’Or, where he will rub shoulders with the biggest stars in world football.

Ralph Straus, FIFA Head of Strategy & Brand Management, said from Zurich: “Congratulations to Alfonso Ramos for winning what was a highly competitive FIFA Interactive World Cup Champions Trophy. It was a great opportunity to see the best of the best going head-to-head on FIFA 14 giving us a taste of what lies ahead for the next edition of the FIWC. Together with EA SPORTS™ and PlayStation® we are planning the most anticipated edition of the tournament. For the first-time ever, highly coveted spots at the Grand Final will be reserved for the Community. Each season the highest ranked player from the top performing nation in terms of community interaction will earn a place at the Grand Final”.

Champion Ramos said: “It was a thrill to be involved in the FIFA Interactive World Cup Champions Trophy against such strong opponents. I loved playing on the new FIFA 14, it is a brilliant game and I enjoyed both the realism and the gaming experience. I hope I can re-produce this form when the 2014 FIFA Interactive World Cup begins in October.”
