Held in Rio de Janeiro from 1-4 July, the FIWC 2014 Grand Final took place during the 2014 FIFA World Cup™, marking the first time that the real and virtual FIFA World Cup were held in the same place and at the same time.

When the 20 Grand Finalists were not competing in the tenth edition of the world’s largest gaming tournament at iconic locations all over Rio, they enjoyed a variety of world class World Cup activities. There was beach football on the Copacabana, a visit to Christ the Redeemer and finally, the experience of a lifetime, watching the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ France-Germany Quarterfinal at the Maracana.

The 2014 Grand Final consisted of two days of tough gameplay. In Day 1 both the group phase and quarterfinals were decided. Defending champion Bruce Grannec quickly crashed out of the tournament after failing to record a single win in the group stage. Several veteran Grand Finalists would follow suite as a new set of faces climbed into the latter stages of the tournament showpiece.

“The competitive level is so high and there are so many players now,” said three-time Grand Finalist August Rosenmeier, who was the only former finalist to survive the group phase. “Normally we always see the same players at the Grand Final, but this year’s seen an evolution and I think next year will be even tougher”

Dutch pair Steven van de Vorst and Jorrick Boshove defeated their respective opponents to earn a semi-final birth in their first appearance at a Grand Final. They were joined in the final four by fellow newcomer David Bytheway (England) and Rosenmeier, leaving the Dane as the last veteran standing for FIWC 2014.

The Grand Final culminated in a final showdown event on Sugarloaf Mountain. Rosenmeier quickly showed his experience and quality, defeating van de Vorst 2-0 and securing a seat in the gold medal match. A close 1-0 victory would edge Bytheway past Boshove and into the Final.

In the presence of football legend Ronaldo, 18-year-old Rosenmeier and 20-year-old Bytheway faced off for the ultimate prize: the interactive world title, USD 20,000 in prize money and a trip to the FIFA Ballon d’Or 2014. Despite suffering an early goal, Rosenmeier raced to a 3-1 victory to secure his first-ever world title.
