Looking at the Round 18 menu, it’s a case of the underdogs against the favourites in almost all ten fixtures. FIFA.com takes a closer look.
Match of the week
Bordeaux-Marseille (France)
Ligue 1 resumes this weekend with leaders Bordeaux up against fourth-placed Marseille. The latter, who trail the reigning French champions by 11 points, have a loose grip on their European qualification place and a win on Sunday would buy them some breathing space. A Marseille upset at Bordeaux would return 77 points, while a draw would yield the largest bounty of 81 points.
On the up
Everton-Manchester City (England)
Despite a poor start to the season, Everton have begun to turn things around. The Toffees are unbeaten in their past six games, including high-scoring draws against Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Arsenal. Manchester City, meanwhile, have kicked it up a gear, enjoying four wins on the trot and beginning to push their draw-heavy record well into the past. An Everton upset returns 82 points, a Man City win 43 points, and a draw – a result both sides have been prone to way too often this season – 75 points.
Two-time hopefuls
Barcelona-Sevilla (Spain)
Sevilla will attempt to make two successive away wins at Camp Nou. Their stunning King’s Cup win over Barcelona on 5 January was, however, soured by a sudden slump in league form. Sevilla have lost their past three league matches, all of which were against lower-ranked opposition. Barcelona are overwhelming favourites, but another Sevilla surprise would return 92 points.
The undefeated
Utrecht-Twente (Netherlands)
Utrecht have the chance to move into fifth place when they face first-placed FC Twente. The league leaders are, however, unbeaten this season with 15 wins and two draws in 17 games. Put your faith on Utrecht and you could bank 84 points. More realistic predictor will most likely take the safer option and bet against the home side (34 points).
Playoff hopefuls
Standard Liege- Anderlecht (Belgium)
The Jupiler Pro League has been drastically altered for the 2009/10 edition. In the new system the top six finishers now enter playoffs for the championship. Seventh-place Standard Liege, who carry a game in hand on three better ranked teams, must therefore topple league leaders Anderlecht this weekend if they aim to muscle their way into the top six. A Liege home win returns 71 points while a seventh Anderlecht win in eight league games returns 59 points.
