FIFA.com is happy to formally announce that zeusch has won McDonald's FIFA World Cup Fantasy. Since snatching pole position back in Matchday 6, the Belgian manager has fended off wave after wave of attack at the top of the Fantasy leaderboard. For his superb effort, zeusch has won a trip for two the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, which includes flights, accommodation, and tickets to all three group stage matches of his favourite team!
Football fans weren’t the only ones stunned on the final day of FIFA World Cup qualification. Top Fantasy Managers all took a knock, scoring well below their averages. Despite returning his weakest performance of the season, zeusch managed to finish 53 points ahead of the closest challenger to clinch the Grand Prize.
Top performers this matchday
The stakes were high on the final day of FIFA World Cup qualification and the intensity of the matches was felt throughout the land of fantasy football. The tight play-off matches saw players return less-points than usual. The highest return this matchday came from Slovenian coach Martjaz Kek (18 points). Kek masterminded the biggest upset of the European play-offs, as his team knocked out Russia.
Between the goalposts, Greece’s Alexandros Tzorvas and Portugal’s Eduardo Dos Reis Carvalho were the best goalkeepers on the day. Their respective clean sheets were worth 14 points apiece.
William Gallas scords one of the most important goals of his career to send France to South Africa. Gallas returned 16 points this matchday. Trailing the Frenchman by just three points, a large pack of defenders, mainly from the Slovenian and Portuguese camps, returned 13 points apiece.
On average midfielders made shallow returns this round. The two best performances came from Portugal’s Raul Meireles (17 points) and Costa Rica’s Walter Centeno (12 points).
Zlatko Dedic (Slovenia) and Dimitrios Salpingidis (Greece) enjoyed world class perfomances against Russia and Ukraine that will be talked about for decades to come. The pair of strikers scored matchwinning goals, thereby ensuring their teams' participation at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
