Asian heavyweights Iran have booked their place at the FIFA Futsal World Cup for the sixth time in their history. The Iranians qualified for the tournament along with Japan, Australia and Thailand after reaching the 2012 AFC Futsal Championship semi-finals on Tuesday.
Iran, who previously won the AFC Futsal Championship ten times, defeated Uzbekistan 6-3 to seal their place in the final four of the continental championship, where they will play hosts Thailand.
Australia, who edged Kuwait 3-2 after extra time, also qualified for the FIFA Futsal World Cup for the sixth time in their history as they clinched their place along with the best placed non semi-finalist Kuwait, who qualified after Thailand - hosts of the 2012 FIFA Futsal World Cup - defeated Lebanon 5-3 in the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile, Japan grabbed the other Asian ticket after claiming a hard-fought 1-0 win over Kyrgyzstan to ensure their fourth appearance at the world finals.
