Matthew Breeze was just 22 years of age when he officiated his first match in Australia's National Soccer League. He was placed on the FIFA international referees' list in 2001, the same year that he took charge of his first Oceania Zone preliminaries for the FIFA World Cup™.
The following year he was called up for the OFC Nations Cup, while in 2003 he made his first appearance in the finals of a FIFA competition, the FIFA U-20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates. Breeze presided over four games during the event, including the play-off for third place between Colombia and Argentina.
In 2005 he participated in the FIFA Confederations Cup and was once again allocated the play-off for third place between Germany and Mexico.
Following Australia's admission into the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) in 2007, Breeze was included in the list of referees for the AFC Asian Cup, overseeing two group-stage matches plus the semi-final between Saudi Arabia and Japan. He also officiated a number of matches in Qatar's top flight.
Later that year, the Australian took part in the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Korea.
When he is not refereeing, Breeze works as a police prosecutor and also enjoys playing golf and cricket.
