When Oribe Peralta was forced to withdraw from the Mexico squad because of injury, Tri coach Jose Manuel de la Torre turned to Gerardo Flores to replace him, even though the Cruz Azul man, who has excelled on the domestic stage this season, occupies a very different position to the Santos centre-forward.

An attack-minded right-back, Flores has also filled on the right side of midfield when required. Now 27, and with sporadically successful spells at Monterrey, Atlas and Jaguares behind him, the man they call Jerry has found both stability and his best form with Los Cementeros.

Though an unlikely starter at Brazil 2013, his speed, technique and ability on the overlap make him an attractive option should De la Torre need to switch to a more attacking formation.
