Jesus Zavala has played an important role in the recent successes enjoyed by Monterrey at domestic and continental level, and has begun to take on a similar status for Mexico as well.

Interestingly, the Nuevo Leon-born player began his club career as a forward, but wily Rayados coach Victor Manuel Vucetich gradually converted him to his current position in central midfield, where his perception and ability to open up the game have seen his stock rise immeasurably.

With Carlos Salcido, Zavala currently forms part of a formidable Mexican midfield, and is likely to appear in the starting line-up in El Tri’s opening match at the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup.
