South Africa's FIFA Confederations Cup 2009 host cities are salivating at the prospect of the likes of Brazil, Italy and Spain heading for their cities.
This after tonight's glamorous FIFA Confederations Cup Draw at the Sandton Convention Centre threw up South Africa, Spain, Iraq and New Zealand in Group A and Brazil, Italy, United States and Egypt in Group B.
The tournament takes place from 14 June 2009 to 28 June 2009 at Johannesburg's Ellis Park Stadium, Rustenburg's Royal Bafokeng Sports Complex, Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein/Mangaung and Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Tshwane/Pretoria. Ellis Park is set to host the opening game between South Africa and Iraq.
"For us it is really mouth-watering to have the FIFA World Cup champions Italy, as well as Brazil coming to our city. It will bring excitement to the city and will really help our promotion of the tournament. You couldn't ask for better matches and our supporters will definitely fill the stadiums," said the 2010 City of Tshwane Co-Ordinator, Godfrey Nkwane.
Tshwane is to host two games featuring the world champion Italy, against Brazil on 21 June 2009 and also the United States on 15 June 2009.
The other Confederations Cup host cities also have some high calibre matches heading their way.
Mangaung/Bloemfontein will host Brazil against Egypt, as well as European champions Spain against Iraq. They will also have hosts South Africa against Spain.
"What more could you ask for? We are very privileged to receive teams of this calibre and we are especially excited about hosting the South African game against Spain" said the CEO of Mangaung 2010, George Mohlakoana.
"There will be no problem filling seats; there is no question that we have a lot of passionate supporters who will do anything to watch the games. For two years running, the supporters of the local team, Bloemfontein Celtic, have won the most passionate supporters award, attendance at games is always good. For the FIFA Confederations Cup it will only be better" said Mohlakoana.
Rustenburg are to welcome back Bafana Bafana, after their victory earlier in the week against Cameroon, who will be playing against New Zealand. They will also play host to New Zealand against Spain as well as the USA against Egypt. "We are happy we are hosting both the champions of Europe (Spain) and the champions of Oceania (New Zealand). They will be great games and the vibe will be electric," said the Rustenberg 2010 Coordinator, Nketu Natima
