Chile’s final warm-up match before the upcoming FIFA Confederations Cup saw the reigning South American champions suffer a 3-2 away defeat to Romania on Tuesday.
The Copa America holders made a bright start to the friendly in Cluj, as Eduardo Vargas and a first international goal for Leonardo Valencia put* La Roja* 2-0 up. But after Bogdan Stancu replied with a free-kick, Chile’s Gary Medel was shown a red card shortly after the half-hour mark.
Romania turned the game around in the second half, as Nicolae Stanciu equalised on the hour mark before Alexandru Baluta struck the winner in the closing stages.
Juan Antonio Pizzi’s side will now make their way back to Russia and prepare for their opening Confederations Cup Group B match against CAF Africa Cup of Nations holders Cameroon at Moscow’s Spartak Stadium on Sunday.
