Veteran defender Lucio, 31, was an unlikely goal hero for Brazil in their memorable 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup final victory. In one of the most dramatic deciders in the tournament’s history, it was the Brazilian captain’s late header that broke American hearts.
The Stars and Stripes had enjoyed a fantastic tournament, beating Spain in the last four, and they very nearly claimed another major scalp in the final. First-half goals from Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan had Brazil on their knees, but A Seleção stormed back after half-time. Luis Fabiano bagged himself a brace before Lucio popped up in the 84th minute to complete the most remarkable comeback in the tournament’s history.
And while the powerful and uncompromising centre-back won many titles in his career, he is unlikely to ever forget that dramatic night in Johannesburg.
