The group fixtures produced 37 goals, the second highest after Saudi Arabia 1997 when 42 goals were scored in the first 12 games. Nineteen goals in the four remaining games will post a new competition record, beating the current best of 55 goals in Mexico 1999.
On this day (1) On 25 June 1950 Switzerland striker Alfred Bickel played in his country's 2-2 draw with FIFA World Cup host nation Brazil in Sao Paulo. It was his first FIFA World Cup appearance since 12 June 1938 and represents the longest break between appearances by any player in the history of the competition.

On this day (3) On 25 June 1950, Sweden ended Italy's winning streak of seven consecutive wins in FIFA World Cup matches. The Azzurri's series began at the 1934 finals against Spain on 1 June. In 2002, Brazil equalled this record sequence and hope to extend it at next year's FIFA World Cup finals.
