It’s the Socceroos who will be going to the semi-finals having a far better goal difference than the co-hosts despite losing to the Koreans 1-0 in their last group match in Suwon.

The French go through to the semis in style. The world champions secured their spot in the semi-finals of the FIFA Confederations Cup Korea/Japan 2001 by easily beating the defending champions Mexico 4-0 in their last group match up in Ulsan.

France started very well as Sylvain Wiltord - who replaced Christophe Dugarry injured during the warming up - scored after receiving a right cross. It took the Mexican team nearly half an hour to approach the French goalkeeper. Beginning of the second half saw the French still controlling the game. Two successive goals by Carriere and Pires achieved Mexican last hopes. France qualified easily. Carriere scoring his second goal, the fourth for france walking to the semi-finals.

With France coming out on top of group A, it all now depends on the ranking in group B to determine their opponents. A draw will be enough for Japan to stay on top (and play Australia) in Yokohama. If the Brazilians win, Japan will be second and play France in Yokohama (as per regulations).
