Germany will replace France as the European representative in the 1999 FIFA Confederations Cup in Mexico.

The replacement comes as a result of the difficulties which the French Football Federation had faced in reconciling the tournament dates with commitments in connection with the French national team, the UEFA club competitions and the French national league at the start of next season. FIFA consulted the German Football Association who have now confirmed their participation following France’s definite withdrawal.

The tournament will take place in Mexico from 24 July to 4 August 1999 – four days earlier than provisionally scheduled. Germany will take France’s place in Group B, playing in Guadalajara against Brazil, the United States and New Zealand.

Group A, in Mexico City, will feature Mexico, Bolivia, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

Germany qualify to represent Europe as the European Champions from 1996, when they defeated the Czech Republic 2-1 in the Final in London.
