Big TV audiences for FIFA Confederations Cup

Almost 30 million Brazilians tuned in to watch their national team beat Japan in the opening match of the FIFA Confederations Cup 2013 on Saturday 15 June 2013, as viewing figures underlined the tournament’s increasing popularity on the global stage.

An average of 26 million viewers watched the hosts’ first match on TV Globo, the second highest sports audience of the year. Coverage by Bandeirantes attracted an additional 3 million viewers.

Saturday’s game also drew an audience of 5.1 million viewers to Japanese channel Fuji TV – five times the audience that the average group stage match achieved during the FIFA Confederations Cup South Africa 2009.

Italy’s victory over Mexico on Sunday,(16 June 2013) scored the highest Italian television audience for a sports event this year – 9.3 million watched the game on RAI Uno.

In the United States, 3.1 million viewers watched the match on Univision – higher than any game broadcast on Univision during the Confederations Cup in 2009.

And Spain’s win over Uruguay, also broadcast on Sunday on Telecinco, produced the biggest audience of the night on Spanish television with some 5.6 million viewers.
