Italy-Japan: Quotes

Cesare Prandelli, Italy coach
It’s a great result for us, one that I think we deserved. We put in a lot of effort on what was a hot night, so the important thing for us now is to rest and get our energy back in time for the Brazil match. To be trailing 2-0 inside 25 minutes was tough to deal with, but we understood what we had to do and got back into the game. We showed great courage by winning tonight, but we’ll have to be better organised and less careless as we continue on. We struggled badly at times, but we’re delighted to have qualified from the group.

Alberto Zaccheroni, Japan coach
The game was a real rollercoaster of emotions – it had a bit of everything! We had several chances to win it. Both teams played with great courage and skill. My players really gave their all and deserved a lot more than what they got. They did what was asked of them, especially given that they were playing against the runners-up from EURO 2012 and one of the favourites for this tournament. We’re heading back home disappointed, but with our heads held high.
