Atletico Mineiro fans had a taste of what might be to come, when the FIFA Club World Cup trophy went on display in Belo Horizonte’s Boulevard Shopping mall last weekend.
The much-coveted piece of silverware attracted an impressive crowd, with more than 8,000 visitors forming long queues to take photos of a trophy they will hope to see their club lift at the FIFA Club World Cup Morocco 2013, which takes place in December.
As they waited, the fans sang non-stop in support of their beloved team, generating a stadium atmosphere inside the shopping centre, so much so that anyone spotted wearing the shirt of O Galo’s arch rivals Cruzeiro was subjected to loud boos.
The trophy pulled in even larger crowds on Sunday, with fans lingering all day long on the concourse and holding their own unique kind of vigil until the shopping centre closed its doors at 22:00 (Brasilia time).
Belo Horizonte was the latest stop on the FIFA Club World Cup Welcome Tour, presented by TOYOTA. The tour will see the trophy visit the cities of the clubs taking part in this year’s competition, Monterrey and Munich among them, with the clubs representing Africa and Asia having yet to be decided.
Its last port of call, just a few days before the tournament begins in Agadir on 11 December, will be Casablanca, the home city of host club Raja.
