FC Barcelona is one of the most successful clubs in Europe, having won twelve major European trophies, including three UEFA Champions League / European Cup titles. Domestically, FC Barcelona has won nineteen La Liga titles, and is one of three clubs never to have been relegated from La Liga.
Founded in 1899, the club is steeped in tradition and, over the course of its long history, has become a Catalan institution in its own right, reflected in the official club motto "Més que un club" which translates as "More than a club". FC Barcelona has exhibited some of the greatest names in world football history, including Johan Cryuff, Diego Maradona, Ronaldo and Romario to name but a few. The current squad is blessed with many world-class stars of its own, with Lionel Messi, Thierry Henry, Xavi and Iniesta being admired all around the world.
FC Barcelona claimed their place at the FIFA Club World Cup UAE 2009 with an awe-inspiring 2-0 victory over the previous European Champions and defending Club World Champions Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League final in May. Having already won their domestic league and the Copa del Rey during the season, the win gave the Spaniards a unique treble.
