Ignacio Ambriz, Club America coach
Before the game I said that we wanted to win – and we did just that. We controlled the game and kept the ball well. We limited them to only a handful of opportunities and I felt that our formation was the right one to use. However, I still felt that we weren’t decisive enough. I wanted to win by a bigger margin. However, this wasn’t an easy game and the scoreline reflected that. They have plenty of power and pace and they put pressure on our defence, but we stood firm. I have to say that after the disappointment of missing out on the semi-final, I’ve been very pleased with the reaction of the team.

Patrice Carteron, TP Mazembe coach
I thought it was a good match between two fairly equal teams. That was particularly pleasing for me, as Mexico are far higher than Congo DR in the world ranking. Our performance was better than in the last match. We fought really well, created some very good chances which we didn’t do in the last match and showed great character after going two goals down. Our only regret is that we don’t have a third game.

Alibaba E-Auto Player of the Match, Osvaldo Martinez (Club America)
We desperately wanted to perform well in this competition and despite the result, we still feel as though we’ve let ourselves down here in Japan. We’re not totally satisfied with our performance but it was pleasing to end with a win.
