Marcelo Gallardo, River Plate coach
It was a very close match, but we expected that. We knew that they were going to be organised, which they were, but I still felt that we controlled the majority of the game. We were the also the firm favourites and there was a lot of expectation on our shoulders. I felt that we lost our way just before half-time, but I told my players to be steady and smart and to be ready and take their chances, and when [one] came from the free-kick, they did just that.
Hajime Moriyasu, Sanfrecce Hiroshima coach
We have to accept the result, but it’s hard to accept as we had decisive moments and a chance to win. They are the strongest team we’ve ever played against both in terms of history and talent. Their speed, power and technique were outstanding, but we were almost able to match them. Until they scored, everything went exactly to the game plan. If we were only able to score, it may have been so different.
