Zayed Sports City is located in the south-east of Abu Dhabi and is a complex entirely and exclusively dedicated to sport venues and their sporting facilities. The headquarters of the UAE Football Association are also located within the site and the Emirates' National Team regularly plays its matches in Zayed Sports City.

The stadium was opened in 1980 as a multi-functional facility, equipped with a running track around the field of play. Spectator capacity is in excess of 45,000 and the stadium stands are covered by an Arabic-inspired roof structure.

More recently the stadium hosted the 2007 Gulf Cup Final, in which the UAE defeated Oman 1-0 to the delight of a full stadium.
