Santiago Bernabeu

Location: Madrid, Spain
Inauguration: 14 December 1947

The story of the mythical Santiago Bernabeu Stadium leads inevitably to the history of its regal owners, Real Madrid, an institution which in 2000 was recognised by FIFA as the Club of the Century.

I Was There…

"Every time I set foot on the Bernabeu turf I got the jitters, a kind of anxiety that takes hold of you the moment you step out into the glare of the floodlights."
Jorge Valdano

  • Pope John Paul II visited Madrid to address a gathering of more than 100,000 Spanish youngsters at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in 1982.
  • The land on which the stadium is built cost around 20,000 US Dollars in 1944 and the total cost of construction amounted to 275,000 USD.
  • Refurbishment work undertaken to adapt the stadium to new UEFA crowd regulations reduced the capacity from an initial 120,000 to 80,000.
  • Architects Luis Alemany Soler and Manuel Munoz Monasterio designed the stadium and its foundation stone was laid on 27 October 1944.
  • In 1955, the ‘Chamartin’ stadium was renamed after Real Madrid chairman Santiago Bernabeu, the man who had helped secure its construction.
