In 1938 the Stade Velodrome was used for only two games. Sixty years later, in 1998, it hosted no less than five matches.
Floodlight failure halted a 1991 Marseille v AC Milan European Cup tie with two minutes to go. Milan trailed 1-0 and refused to reappear.
Throughout the Velodrome’s reconstruction prior to France 98, at least 25,000 spaces were kept open for Olympique de Marseille games.
Evening fixtures were made possible at the Velodrome in 1958 when floodlights were finally fitted along the side stands at the venue.
The Velodrome originally featured an athletics/cycling track and a football pitch. All three sports marked the stadium’s opening in 1937.
