The worldwide football family has been shocked to learn of the death of seven amateur footballers from south east Turkey. According to local media reports, they were killed on Sunday night when a landslide rushed on to a small football pitch in the city of Sirnak, submerging players and public alike.

FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter has sent a condolence letter to the President of the Turkish FA, Yildirim Demiroren, to express his condolences.

"Personally, and on behalf of the international football community, I would like to extend our sincerest condolences to the families of the victims, to you and everyone at the Turkish Football Federation", the FIFA President wrote.

"Although words can do little to comfort the pain and anguish being suffered in your country at this moment, I would like you to know that the football family is thinking of the Turkish people at this sad time".
