- Antonio Cabrini was the first man to miss a penalty in the final. Italy’s Roberto Baggio and Franco Baresi missed in the 1994 shoot-out.
- This contest was the first of three successive appearances by Germany FR in the FIFA World Cup Final match but they only won one, in 1990.
- When he collected the FIFA World Cup trophy, Dino Zoff said he was so happy he almost lost his composure and kissed Queen Sofia of Spain.
- The 1982 final was the fourth clash between the sides at the FIFA World Cup. Italy won 4-3 in 1970 while the 1962 and 1978 games were 0-0.
- The teams did not meet in the FIFA World Cup™ again until 2006, when eventual winners Italy beat hosts Germany 2-0 in the semi-finals.
