The 1986 FIFA World Cup Mexico TM quarter-final between France and Brazil was always going to be one to savour - the recently crowned kings of Europe against the undisputed champions of romantic football.

I Was There…

Luis Fernandez (France)
I'd chosen to go last because I thought it would be over before my turn came. Since the goalkeeper started moving in the direction I wanted to put the ball, I struck it to the other side at the last moment. But, in that type of game, it's as much about the spectacle as it is the result.

Did You Know?

  • On that fateful day, both team’s biggest stars missed spot kicks. Zico’s try during regular time was saved by Bats and Platini hit well over bar in the shootout.
  • Prior to losing to France at Mexico 86, the Brazilians had won all ten of their previous FIFA World Cup finals matches on Mexican soil.
  • France failed to qualify for the next two tournaments despite their strong showing at the 1986 finals. They returned as hosts in 1998.
  • France enjoyed more success against Brazil when they beat them 3-0 in the 1998 FIFA World Cup final and 1-0 in the 2006 quarter-finals.
  • The match in Guadalajara was a repeat of their meeting in the 1958 FIFA World Cup™ semi-final when Brazil beat France 5-2 in Stockholm.
