Argentina - Netherlands

Date: 25 June 1978
Stadium: Monumental River Plate
The Final may not have been the greatest game of all time, but it is still remembered for the passion and commitment shown by both sides, and above all the unbelievable atmosphere in the Estadio Monumental of Buenos Aires.

I Was There…

Luis Cesar Menotti (Argentina coach)
The effectiveness of our tactics was due to the players' ability to carry out my instructions to the letter. Without discipline, you can achieve nothing. Someone who doesn't know exactly what he is looking for never gets anything done.

Did You Know?

  • Argentina’s Osvaldo Ardiles needed three injections to numb the pain of a broken toe and a swollen ankle before he started in the Final.
  • Neither of the goalkeepers had the number one jersey. Argentina’s Ubaldo Fillol wore five while the Netherlands’ Jan Jongbloed wore eight.
  • Golden Boot winner Mario Kempes recalled: “If (Rob) Rensenbrink hadn’t hit the post in the Final, he would have been the top scorer.”
  • Before kick-off, Argentina protested about the cast worn by Rene Van de Kerkhof to protect his injured arm but he was cleared to play.
  • The teams eventually met again in the 1998 FIFA World Cup quarter-finals, when the Netherlands gained revenge by beating Argentina 2-1.
