Portugal - Korea DPR

Date: 23 July 1966
Stadium: Goodison Park
Golden Shoe winner Eusebio enjoyed his finest moment of the 1966 FIFA World Cup in a remarkable quarter-final against Korea DPR. The Benfica striker struck four goals as Portugal overhauled a three-goal deficit to beat the tournament's surprise package.

I Was There…

Eusebio (Portugal)
Every time I scored it was just a question of picking the ball out of the net, carrying it to the centre circle and getting on with looking for another one.

Did You Know?

  • Members of the Korean squad went back to England more than 30 years later, revisiting the scene of their defeat of Italy in Middlesbrough.
  • Eusebio’s four goals in one game against Korea DPR is not a tournament record as Oleg Salenko scored five for Russia v Cameroon at USA 94.
  • Goodison Park witnessed plenty of goals in the 1966 finals, with 21 scored in five games there – an average of more than four per game.
  • Korea DPR’s defeat of Italy is famous but other group games are less familiar: a 1-1 draw with Chile and a 3-0 loss to the Soviet Union.
  • Korean leader Kim Il-sung said the team could not expect to win the 1966 FIFA World Cup™ but they may “certainly win one or two games”.
