England - West Germany

Date: 30 July 1966
Stadium: Wembley Stadium

Geoff Hurst's historic hat-trick won the world crown for 1966 hosts England as they beat arch-rivals West Germany 4-2 at Wembley in the first FIFA World Cup™ final to go to extra time.

I Was There…

Geoff Hurst: "I have to admit that I had a bit of sympathy for the Germans. They genuinely believed the ball had not crossed the line and they may be right. I can no more claim with certainty that the ball did cross the line than they can claim that it didn't."

Did You Know?

  • Germany settled an old score when they beat England 1-0 in the last match played at the old Wembley before it was demolished in 2000.
  • One of the men who invaded the pitch just as Geoff Hurst scored England’s fourth goal later said he thought the match had finished 3-2.
  • Before England’s Bobby Moore lifted the Jules Rimet trophy, he wiped his hands on the podium to avoid spoiling The Queen’s white gloves.
  • Azerbaijan’s national stadium is named after their FA’s former general secretary Tofik Bakhramov, the famous linesman in the 1966 final.
  • England were to eventually suffer at the hands of Germany FR, who knocked them out of the FIFA World Cup finals in 1970, 1982 and 1990.
