Match summary
The 1987 final remains vivid in the memory above all for the extreme weather conditions (fog and snow) and the poor condition of the pitch. Taking advantage of disarray on the part of Penarol's players, who had just left the hot South American summer behind them, Porto took a stranglehold on the game and went in front just before half-time when the ubiquitous Gomes turned in a ball from Algerian lynchpin Madjer.

Penraol fought their way back into the match after the break, though, as coach Oscar Tabarez tried out a three-man attack. And the Uruguayans got the equaliser their efforts deserved when Matosas converted a free-kick from Viera on 80 minutes. With the scores level, the match went into extra-time and the stage was set for Madjer to let his talents shine. Intercepting a pass from Trasante, the Algerian spotted in an instant that Penarol's goalkeeper Pereira was off his line and struck the ball into a practically empty net (110').

Key player
Scorer of an awe-inspiring 288 goals in the Blue-and-White shirt, Fernando Gomes deserves his own chapter in the history of FC Porto. He found the back of the net with staggering regularity, and his least productive season, 1984, still yielded 21 strikes in 30 matches. His best figures came the very next year and, needless to say, his haul of 39 goals in 30 games that term remains a record.

Unsurprisingly perhaps, his scoring feats earned him the European Golden Shoe on two occasions (1983 and 1985), something only five other players have ever achieved. Less successful with the Portuguese national team, he nevertheless found the target 13 times in 48 appearances.

Coach
A workmanlike striker during his 13 seasons with FC Split, Tomislav Ivic became a coach whose motto was "victory alone is worthwhile". Entertainment mattered little and the scoreline when the referee blew his final whistle was everything. It was a philosophy that served him well too, and he collected a dozen titles with Hajduk Split, Ajax Amsterdam, Anderlecht, Panathinaikos, Avellino and Porto.

Ivic is without doubt one of football's great nomads. He also coached PSG, Atletico Madrid, Marseille, Benfica, Fenerbahce and Standard Liège, and was appointed Croatia's national technical director before bossing Iran and the United Arab Emirates. After one last stint with Marseille and a heart scare in 2001, he called time on his career at the age of 68.
