Match Summary
Nottingham Forest, who had succeeded in retaining the
European Cup and were on an impressive unbeaten run of 42 games,
entered the match as the overwhelming favourites. However, in the
10 th minute Nacional right back José Hermes Moreira broke down the
flank and put over a perfect cross for Waldemar Victorino to put
his side into what proved to be an unassailable lead.
Key players
Born on 22 May 1952 in Montevideo, Waldemar Victorino began
making a name for himself while playing for River Plate in
Argentina during the 1976 season. Nacional brought him back to his
homeland across the Rio de la Plata at the start of the 1979
season.
Slight of build and short of stature, Victorino hovered in and around the penalty area. His extraordinary speed off the mark enabled him to get the better of more robust and athletically built defenders. Over two seasons he was responsible for all of Nacional's decisive goals.
On 6 August 1980, in the final of the Copa Libertadores against Internacional de Porto Alegre, he headed home the game's only goal from a fine delivery by Hermes Moreira following a Morales free kick.
On 11 February 1981 in Tokyo, he once again scored the only goal of the game in the Toyota Cup against Nottingham Forest when in the 10 th minute he volleyed home a cross by Hermes Moreira.
Coach
Juan Martin Mugica is only the second footballer in history,
after his compatriot Luis Cubilla, to have won the Intercontinental
Cup as both a player and coach.
Mugica was a solid defender who operated down the left flank. Uncompromising, he possessed a vicious left-foot shot which meant that his name was no stranger to the scoresheet. With Nacional he won three Uruguayan League Titles (1969, 1970 and 1971), the 1971 Copa Libertadores and the Intercontinental Cup. He also played in the FIFA World Cup Finals in 1966 and 1970, helping the Celeste secure 4 th place at the latter.
He moved into coaching at the start of the 1980 season, taking over Nacional's reserve side. But following the resignation of Pedro Dellacha after Nacional's disappointing start to the season, he was appointed caretaker coach of the first team. This signalled the start of a dazzling coaching career. His first move was to bring back three of the successful 1971 side (Blanco, Espárrago and Morales) and introduce a previously unheard of man-to-man marking system all over the pitch, which completely bamboozled their rivals. In his first season in charge, he achieved an amazing treble (Copa Libertadores, Toyota Cup and the Uruguayan Championship) which secured his place in the club's history.
