Match Summary
After further disappointment in 1974, the Argentines clinched their second trophy against Liverpool in 1984. This time, the foundations of the South Americans' success were laid after just six minutes, when Marangoni split the English side's defence with a clever through ball that was collected neatly by Percudani, who easily outwitted Grobbelaar in goal. The match was as good as over, for the Reds' forwards laboured in vain to find a chink in the armour of the Red Devils' defence.

Key player
Born on 9 October 1962 in Gualeguay (in Argentina's Entre Rios province), Jorge Luis Burruchaga was the ideal foil for Diego Maradona at the heart of the Argentine national side, most notably at the 1986 FIFA World Cup Mexico TM.

"Burru" scored the winning goal against Germany (3-2) in the World Cup Final that year, and also played in all his country's games at the 1990 FIFA World Cup. In all, he struck 13 times in 59 appearances for Argentina.

At club level, he won one domestic championship, a Copa Libertadores and the 1984 Toyota Cup with Independiente. After spending eight seasons in France (seven with Nantes and one at Valenciennes) he made the final appearance of his career on 10 April 1998 for Independiente in a 3-0 defeat by Velez. He is currently coaching in the Argentinian league.

Coach
The name of Jose Omar Pastoriza is forever linked to that of Independiente. His many nicknames ("el caudillo", "el crack", "el ganador"...) offer an insight into the strong character of this elegant and technically gifted coach with a never-say-die mentality.

Originally from Rosario, this midfielder first found success as a player with Independiente from 1966 to 1972 (three domestic titles and a Copa Libertadores) before moving to Monaco. In 1976, he returned to Independiente as coach, a position he held uninterruptedly for fifteen years, an Argentinian record. As the months and years passed, he forged a veritable "red family", a closely knit group that played with the accent on attack, a policy that won him three further league titles, a Copa Libertadores and a Toyota Cup. During another stint as coach, Pastoriza died on 2 August 2004.
