Match summary
Despite being without several regulars through injury, reigning European champions Hamburg started as favourites, as many felt Gremio were lacking experience at this level.

But inspired by their star player Renato, the Brazilians quickly took the game by the scruff of the neck. In the 37 th minute, the striker produced some surreal skill out on the left wing, slipping past Hieronymus before squeezing a shot in at the near post. Despite repeated German onslaughts, the Brazilians continued to control the game, thanks mainly to the tireless efforts of their two ball-winning midfielders, Mario Sergio (33) and Paulo Cesar Lima (34).

But far from resigning themselves to defeat, the Germans changed things around, sending the athletic defender Jakobs up front to add some aerial presence to their attacks. These tactics worked a treat, as with five minutes of normal time remaining, Schroder equalised after being fed by Jakobs. Just as the spectators prepared themselves for extra-time, Renato picked up a cross from Caio in the third minute of injury time, advanced on goal and found the back of the net with a peach of a right-foot shot.

Key player
The main claim to fame of the striker Renato Portaluppi, more commonly known as Renato Gaucho, is to have scored two goals in the Toyota Cup final of 1983. Between 1983 and 1993, this livewire attacker was capped 23 times by the Seleçao, without ever really establishing himself as a regular in the national team.

At the start of his career, he remained faithful to Gremio (1981 to 1987), with whom he won a Brazilian title and a Copa Libertadores, plus the Toyota Cup 1983 Man of the Match award. He subsequently had spells with several clubs, including a spell with Roma sandwiched between stints at Flamengo and Fluminense, without ever staying anywhere for more than a season.

Coach
An inveterate traveller if ever there was one, Valdyr Atahualpa Ramirez Espinosa won his most prized piece of silverware with Gremio, four years after starting out in the profession. An excellent man manager, he was a firm believer in fostering harmonious relations within his squad in order to maximise productivity. After two seasons with Gremio, with whom he did the Copa Libertadores-Toyota Cup double in 1983, he alternated sojourns overseas (Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, Tokyo Verdi in Japan and several Paraguayan clubs) with spells back home in the Brazilian championship (with Botafogo, Palmeiras, Corinthians and Fluminense). It was in Paraguay, however, that he got back to winning ways, guiding Cerro Porteno to the domestic title in both 1987 and 1992.
