Gabriele Gori and Emmanuele Zurlo bagged five goals between them as Italy thumped Costa Rica 6-1 in the opening match of the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup.

It took Gori merely 34 seconds to ripple the net in Espinho, only for Costa Rica to surprisingly equalise through Greivin Pacheco.

Possibility of an upset was short-lived, however, as two more goals from Gori, a Zurlo brace and an Andres Villegas own-goal sent Massimiliano Esposito’s in at the end of the second period leading 6-1.

That was how it finished as Italy took their foot off the gas in the final 12 minutes. Gli Azzurri, runners-up in the recent European qualifiers, go top of Group B, which also contains Switzerland and Oman.
