A Madjer-inspired Portugal survived a late fightback from Japan to begin their FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup campaign with a 4-2 success.

A double from the towering 38-year-old, a five time winner of this competition’s adidas Golden Shoe, and a Be Martins strike had Mario Narciso’s men cruising towards victory.

However, goals from Shotaro Haraguchi and Naoya Matsuo ensured a tense final four minutes. Japan pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Alan scored from a counter-attack to put the contest beyond their reach.

Argentina and Senegal also comprise Group A.
