Argentina’s confidence has received a dent heading into their quarter-final meeting with hosts Tahiti after Netherlands hauled in a four-goal deficit to win on penalties.
Argentina incredibly scored two goals inside the opening 12 seconds to put tournament debutants Netherlands on the back foot from the start.
The South American champions doubled their lead before the end of the first period as the Dutch faced a rout.
Netherlands captain Patrick Ax clipped the crossbar with a header in a rare goalscoring opportunity for the Oranje.
Suddenly the Dutch built some momentum with, firstly a lucky goal direct from goalkeeper Frank Van der Geest, and then a superb strike from Ax.
Argentina’s Vivas bagged his hat-trick, while Edwin Van Rooijen reduced the margin to two as the Netherlands finally found their feet.
Ax bagged his second for the Netherlands only for the same player to see his penalty well saved by Cesar Mendoza.
But there was to be more late drama as Charlie van den Ouweland scored with three seconds remaining.
Extra time failed to break the deadlock with penalties required for the first time in the tournament.
