It was the first game of the FIFA Confederations Cup Brazil 2013, and Luiz Felipe Scolari’s Seleção were testing themselves against the best in the world. Neymar did not waste time in showing what he could do on 15 June in Brasilia. In the third minute Marcelo chipped the ball into the middle from the left flank, where Fred knocked it down with his chest. In the blink of an eye Neymar, still outside the box, with his body leaning slightly to the left, hit it first-time with no backlift.
“The moment you hit the ball you realise whether or not it’s a clean strike,” he told FIFA.com after the match. “I felt I had made a good connection, looked up to see if the ball would go in or not and it did.”
It rocketed in and triggered a fantastic run for the host nation. The campaign began with a 3-0 win over Japan and ended 15 days later with another 3-0 win, this time at the Maracana stadium, against reigning world champions, Spain. From the moment Neymar’s spectacular strike in Brasilia hit the back of the net, A Seleção began to put down a marker at one of the favourites to win the FIFA World Cup in 2014.
