Who will succeed Cristiano Ronaldo, Hamit Altintop, Neymar and Miroslav Stoch and become the fifth winner of the FIFA Puskás Award? It’s up to you, the users of FIFA.com, along with those of francefootball.fr, to decide – and what a breathtaking selection you have to choose from.
Australian Lisa De Vanna rose above the ordinary in more ways than one back in June. A pleasant summer evening at Yurcak Field Stadium in New Jersey was made extraordinary by De Vanna’s goal. Sky Blue FC midfielder Katy Freels scooped a ball from the side of the penalty area to near the penalty spot where De Vanna had marginally overran the pass.
The pint-sized Australian, however, is known for her unpredictability and, in one motion, she pivoted and launched herself in the air to execute a textbook bicycle kick, made all the made remarkable by the speed of the movement. De Vanna made a precise and powerful connection, leaving Boston Breakers goalkeeper Ashley Phillips as nothing but a spectator, albeit one with a perfect view. The second goal of the contest helped Sky Blue record a 5-1 win in the maiden season of the National Women’s Soccer League, and proved the game's definining moment.
So, watch the above video of De Vanna’s gravity-defying finish, and the other nine contenders, which FIFA.com will be presenting in alphabetical order in the near future, on FIFA on YouTube, and then vote for your favourite. The top three on 9 December will then enter another vote on the FIFA Puskas award section, from which the winner will lift the prestigious trophy at the FIFA Ballon d’Or Gala on 13 January.
