Lionel Messi collected a record-breaking fourth consecutive title of best player in the world when he was awarded the 2012 FIFA Ballon d’Or, while US player Abby Wambach claimed her first FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year award.

Lionel Messi is the FIFA Ballon d'Or 2012 winner. He was elected by the coaches and captains of the national teams of the 209 FIFA Member Associations and a selected group of media. Messi was been elected in front of runner-up Cristiano Ronaldo and Andres Iniesta, who came third.
