The Zurich Opera House was the setting for a magical night as the FIFA World Player Gala 2007 came to town on 17 December.

Fabio Cannavaro and Marta were named the FIFA World Players of 2006 in Zurich on Monday evening, following a poll of national coaches and captains around the world.

The FIFA World Player Gala 2005 has reached its verdict; Ronaldinho and Birgit Prinz have been recognised for the second consecutive year.

The votes have been counted and the identities of the FIFA World Player and FIFA Women's World Player 2004 are now known. Ronaldinho carries off the men's award while Birgit Prinz takes her second women's title in succession.

A veritable who's who of world football came together in Basle on Monday for the 13th end-of-year FIFA World Player awards ceremony, crowning another glittering year of drama and triumph on the world's football pitches.

Ronaldo and Mia Hamm have been crowned king and queen of football at a star-studded FIFA World Player of the Year 2002 Gala in Madrid this evening.

Portugal’s Luis Figo, second last year, has gone one better and been crowned the best men’s player on the planet, while Mia Hamm of USA has become the maiden FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year.

Zinedine Zidane has become only the second player to be crowned FIFA World Player of the Year twice, following up his triumph in 1998 to add to his winner's medal from UEFA EURO 2000.

Barcelona supremo Rivaldo became the third Brazilian in the FIFA World Player of the Year's short history to be crowned with the title, lighting up the stage in Brussels in front of all the biggest names in the game.

Zinedine Zidane got the better of Ronaldo for the second time in a year as the Frenchman beat the Brazilian to be crowned FIFA World Player of the Year 1998 having bested him in the FIFA World Cup™ final.

FIFA invited the football world to its annual Gala Evening, this year in Lisbon, and the guests responded willingly to applaud the world's outstanding trio of strikers and an exceptional sportsman.

The FIFA World Player of the Year Gala in Milan on 8 January 1995 proved to be a great football party, with George Weah, Paolo Maldini and Jurgen Klinsmann the three prizewinners.

The Brazilian striker, Romario, has been chosen as FIFA World Player of the Year by the national coaches of FIFA's member associations with a total of 346 points.

FIFA's World Player of the Year for 1993 is Roberto Baggio. The schemer in the Italian national team was awarded 152 points by national coaches from all around the world.

The name of the FIFA World Player of the Year 1992 is Marco Van Basten. The 28-year-old AC Milan and Netherlands striker was presented with the Golden Football prize at a gala event in Estoril near Lisbon.

The inaugural FIFA Player of the Year award went to German midfielder Lothar Matthaus, with Jean-Pierre Papin and Gary Lineker second and third in the standings.
