A total of 90 of the worlds leading coaches have made Rivaldo their top choice for FIFA Player of the Year for 1999. Rivaldo, with 538 points , is followed in second place by England's David Beckham with 194 points and Gabriel Batistuta in third with 79 points.It is the ninth year that the FIFA World Player has been selected by the coaches of the world's national teams, with a record 140 coaches taking part in this year's voting. Zinedine Zidane of France won the title last year, the previous winners having been Ronaldo (Brazil, 1996 and 1997), George Weah (Liberia, 1995), Romario (Brazil, 1994), Roberto Baggio (Italy, 1993), Marco Van Basten (Holland, 1992) and Lothar Matthäus (Germany, 1991).

The three contenders for the title of FIFA World Player 1999 were:

  1. Rivaldo (FC Barcelona/Brazil)
  2. David Beckham (Manchester United/England)
  3. Gabriel Batistuta (AC Fiorentina/Argentina)

The recipients of the other FIFA annual awards have already been announced:

  • Team of the Year - Brazil
  • Best Mover of the Year - Slovenia
  • FIFA Fair Play Prize for 1999 - New Zealand football community
The adidas Golden, Silver and Bronze Balls will be presented to the three best players of the 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup and FIFA Confederations Cup as voted upon by the accredited media at those competitions. The top goal scorers will receive the adidas Golden, Silver and Bronze Shoes, and the teams with the best disciplinary record and respect for the spirit of the game will receive the competition Fair Play awards.
