Whether donning a fancy tuxedo or a classic three-piece suit, the stars of the footballing world certainly know how to raise eyebrows when it comes to their choice of evening wear at the FIFA Ballon d’Or ceremony. As is the case when the Oscars are handed out at the Academy Awards in Hollywood, the ladies will ooze glamour and the men style, either in garb designed by the best or, as we have had in the past, their own edgy creations.
It was in an outfit of her own making – a majestic red dress – that Colombian pop star Shakira took to the stage at the 2011 ceremony, providing one of the most memorable red carpet moments in FIFA Ballon d'Or history. And in the same year, Japanese women’s footballer Homare Sawa proved she possesses a je ne sais quoi not just on the pitch but off it as well, attending in a traditional, light blue kimono.
Lionel Messi also displayed his acute fashion sense when he wowed the audience by collecting the FIFA Ballon d'Or 2012 in a dotted tuxedo, tailor-made by Dolce & Gabbana. “The suit was my idea. I wanted to surprise people and do something different,” the Barcelona man said.
