For years she was a star just waiting to be discovered. Tiffeny Carleen Milbrett, born on 23 October 1972 in Portland, Oregon, is a striker in the shadows of superstars such as Michelle Akers and Mia Hamm. Milbrett made her debut in the USA national team in 1991 and has since made 169 appearances, scoring 86 goals. She currently stands at number 6 in the FIFA Century Club.
She helped the USA to third place at the 1995 FIFA Women's World Cup in Sweden, but shot to stardom at the 2000 Olympic Games in Atlanta, scoring in the high-scoring final against China. Her star continued to rise, and the petite Milbrett (just 158 cm tall) was an integral part of the USA team that became World Champions in 1999 and won silver at the Sydney Olympics in 2000. She starred for New York Power in WUSA, the professional women’s league in America, and helped her team to third place. She was also selected as the top player in the league and finished at the top of the goal-scoring charts with 16 goals in just 20 games.
Milbrett had a rather humble start to life before majoring in Communications Management at the University of Portland. She now owns a house in the city and intends to live there once her glittering career is finally over. Her feet are well and truly planted on the ground.
Milbrett inherited her love of the game from her mother, who was also a talented footballer. Her friends talk of a football coaching video, filmed around 20 years ago by Clive Charles, in which Milbrett starred as the only girl. She certainly left a lasting impression on Charles, the famous Portland coach and part of the coaching team at US Soccer (Men’s U-23 team, previously Women’s U-20). Charles handed Milbrett a shirt and said, "You will always have a place in my team".
Ten years later, she did have a place in his team. Milbrett's love for football is simply greater than her love for athletics and basketball. Unbelievably, Milbrett also excels on the basketball court. A true sportswoman, Milbrett also plays tennis, golf and enjoys skiing. Her pace is one of her real assets in football.
