Football in Trinidad & Tobago
Along with Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago dominate football in the Caribbean. Trinidad & Tobago have won the Copa Caribe on seven separate occasions. At the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2000, Trinidad & Tobago also finished third. Now, to crown their constant development work, they have qualified for their first ever final competition by reaching the FIFA World Cup? in Germany. The nation first qualified for a FIFA final competition in 1991 (U-17 World Championship in Portugal) and hosted the same competition in 2001. Three players have also made an impression in top European leagues. Dwight Yorke (discovered at the U-17 World Championship in Portugal) plays for Sydney FC (Australia), Stern John dons the colours of Coventry City (England) and Russell Latapy plays for Falkirk in Scotland.
The second Goal project
On 17 February 2005, the Goal Bureau approved the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation's second project, which was inaugurated on 30 March 2007 by FIFA Vice-President Jack A. Warner. The construction of a new artificial pitch at the existing Centre of Excellence was approved in summer 2005. The facility allows players to train under excellent conditions all year round, thus ensuring development programmes can be conducted without any disruption.
