Football in Syria
Football is by far and away the number one sport in Syria. In 1987, the national team won the Gold medal at the Mediterranean Games Football Tournament in Latakia (Syria). The Syrians qualified for the FIFA World Youth Championship in 1989, 1991 and 1995, achieving a best finish of sixth place in Portugal in 1991. Firas Al-Khatib is currently the latest in a succession of well-known players. The talented youngster is seen as a future star of Syrian football.
