Football in Sudan
Sudan is a sport-loving nation where football reigns supreme. The championship consists of a national Super League of 12 teams and local competitions in 54 regions (each with three divisions). There are also national, regional and local cup competitions. The Sudan Football Association celebrated its most notable success in 1991 by qualifying for the final competition of the FIFA U-17 World Youth Championship in Italy, where the nation's talented youngsters finished in 10th position.
Third Goal project
After a technical centre was built in Khartoum and then extended to include two mini artificial pitches, the Sudanese association's third project comprises building a regional technical centre in the southern part of the vast country. The focal point of the projects is creating comfortable accommodation for regional teams and teaching and meeting rooms. The association is thus hoping to decentralise its activities somewhat. On 4 February 2008, the Goal Bureau approved this project, which is expected to take eight months to complete.
